My time in Cornwall was refreshing. In this blog I will share random mini discoveries in Cornwall that I noticed whilst practicing mindfulness.
The 4 hour and a half trip on the train went by in no time. I didn’t look out at the view much except for a couple of times. Totally engaged in a new memoir titled ‘Brutally Honest’, my head tilted on the butterfly neck pillow as I absorbed every word.

Author-Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) shares many memories of her upbringing in Leeds, relationships (particularly one that was abusive), career and the LA lifestyle as a super star. Some chapters were more horrific than others, but I loved learning about her life and I could relate to a lot of her experiences in the emotions department. When my eyes weren’t welling up on Mel B’s recollections, I’d spot sheep and a few cows in the distance silently munching the greenery away. “It’s nice being in a new part of the UK where I have no chance of seeing anyone” I thought to myself. It feels like a fresh start.
Sunday walk
I finally enjoyed my longest walk on Palm Sunday. I threw on a comfy sports bra and hoodie, paired with a new pair of ‘Go Walk’ Sketchers leggings bought recently at wholesaler Costco. Then I slipped on a pair of black sketchers shoes to go with it.
Then I picked up a couple of satsumas, a banana and proceeded to the door. I released a breath that confirmed it was time to enjoy the outdoors, it was well over due.
1st Mini Discovery in Cornwall
After stepping out I turned right. Truro Train station was the first landmark I passed. Pretty quiet I remembered waiting for my loved one to meet me the day I arrived. The sun bursted through the clouds and I was able to soak up all the rays. This time there was no sun only a feeling of fresh air and a breeze that the big birds above glided through elegantly. I turned on the ‘run keeper’ app to monitor key aspects like my steps, duration of the entire walk, and calories (which I don’t pay much attention to). I felt happy inside to finally have made a decision to do something for myself.
2nd Mini discovery in Cornwall
I passed Sainsburys where we normally picked up groceries and had visited a few times over the past couple days. Positioned prominently near a busy roundabout and opposite it’s rival Aldi, I wasn’t planning to go in this time and make any purchases. If you ever visit this one you will notice a few differences contrary to London branches. Trolleys were neatly stored and have black wires instead of silver. Inserting £1 coins aren’t required either. The middle section of the car park was sheltered so shoppers can experience comfort in any weather condition.
3rd Mini discovery in Cornwall
Instead of turning towards the road that leads you to a Hospital and University, I walked briskly in the opposite direction until I passed my next highlight which was the Cornwall Council County Hall-Lay Kernow. Hence, a flag blew with the logo and two other flags beside it. The grounds it stood on was huge and was surrounded by masses of grass. Looking beyond the grey building I could see huge rectangles of grass. Not sure if I could walk deeper into the premises. I stood under a hanging tree, took a moment to admire the view and captured a picture for memories.
Afterwards, I passed the Meat Machine Rugby Club. ‘We have moved in big capital letters, and hiring for staff’ appeared on the signage. I began to wonder about the tides of hulk lookalikes that would normally be running around this place. And the noises they would make which would tremble opposing fans with fear. The outside was sprinkled with yellow daffodils which brought life to the entrance even though no-one was physically on site.
4th Mini discovery in Cornwall
I turned around sporadically to face the stream of cars flying past.I was blown away by a marvelous view it took me by surprise. In the middle of the horizon stood Truro Cathedral. The pointed roofs were like a rocket about to take off.
I perched myself on a bench that was in memory of a family gone to heaven.
A tear rolled down my eye. I wanted to feel loved in that moment and loneliness crept up on me. Sitting with my feelings, people walked by and smiled at me, saying hello in their friendly tones I felt acknowledged. Ahead was a residential road. I jogged to the bottom of the hill. A beautiful little home on the corner caught my eye. Painted in white it looked pristine and had the smallest bright blue garage to the left of it. Afraid to take a picture incase anyone saw me I immediately returned to jogging up to the top of the hill. Allowing my heart rate to stabilize I enjoyed the view one last time.

Finally, this little account I shared of my mini discoveries in Cornwall seemed to keep me enlightened during a casual walk alone. Being mindful kept me in the moment and free from herds of self judgment as well as ruminating thoughts. Undoubtedly, daylight works wonders at boosting mood and focus. I also believe discovering a new environment temporarily can work wonders too on mental health.
